Friday, June 3

Today’s weather was sunny but cool.  We were to be transported by van to Cruz de Ferro – or the Iron Cross.  This was the place in the movie, THE WAY, where the characters placed their rocks and said a pilgrim prayer.  I finally asked Rosita about the significance of the rocks.  The rock is a symbol of all your worries, problems, troubles, cares and woes.  As you place them at the foot of the cross, you’re “letting go”.  How often have we uttered those words – “Just let it go”?  Easier said than done.  The pile of rocks at the foot of the cross has grown over the years, according to local guides.  It was an uphill climb for us!

Rosita and Iago had prepped us for today’s ride a number of times.  It would be a 20k (12miles) downhill run, beginning at the cross.  They advised us on the proper technique of braking, negotiating the curves and speed.  I was so nervous about it; I had disrupted sleep.  Add my nerves to the placement of the rocks, and I’m sure you can imagine what I was letting go of!

We finally got under way and it was incredible!  At first, a slow, controlled descent was the order of the day.  As the miles ticked off, and confidence was built, I was sorry when it was over!

We  entered a town dominated by a castle (what else is new?) and had lunch in the square.  It was then onto Las Herrerias.

The afternoon was very very tough.  I wanted to give up so many times.  It seemed that we were never reaching the next direction on the cue sheet.  The ride was flat and long for many miles – it almost made me wish for a hill just for some diversion!  When we reached the last leg of the ride, Iago came up behind me and actually pushed me the last 1/8 mile.  It freaked me out a little, but what a difference it made!  The hotel resembled a chalet – all stone and wood.  I was so tired, I almost missed dinner (almost!).  It was a tough day, but so gratifying to have completed it!
