On the road again… next stop – Quaglietta – hometown of my father and Marie’s ancestors.  Because it was a long drive, we were packed and ready to go by 8am.  The trip was not too bad, with stops about every 2 hours.  Lenny had intended to stop by 1 for lunch in Paestum.
Paestum is a seaside town having Greek ruins.  We found a delightful restaurant for lunch (Tre Olive) in the Hotel Savoy.  Pretty Posh!  Wine was great, as was the food and service.  Marie and Bob had bass, Lenny had octopus, Eddie had pasta, and I can’t remember what me and Antoinette had… trust that it was great!
We walked around the grounds, boasting a pool, gardens, and an infinity water feature that was exquisite.

Marie and I decided it would be a great wedding venue if we were to do it again!!
Arrival in Qualietta by 4… when the castle came into view, I pointed it out to everyone.  It must have finally sank in and Antoinette said “what – we’re sleeping up there!?!?!??”

We found our way to the piazza where the locals eyed us.  Leaving the car, I led the way down the alley to the castle and the Albergo Difusso.  Not too much English spoken here!  Marie is testing her newfound language and she’s doing great.  Given the keys, we were shown the 3 rooms.  Marie and Ed opted for the one most high…up yet another flight of stairs.  A little background… when I was here as a 15 year old, the castle was in pretty much ruins then.  Then the earthquake of ’80 destroyed much more of it.  Remember, the castle dates back to the 13th century.  OK – so 2018 it opens as a hotel…stone everything and stone everywhere.  Steps where probably were none have been fashioned into the rocks and walls of the mountain.  So when Marie saw where her room was, she took up the challenge to be closer to the heavens.

Getting the bags into our rooms, was another story – no bellhops or help of any kind.  Sketchy internet to say the least.  But the simplicity and the beauty of the mountains make up for modern day conveniences.

We settled in, had a light dinner at the Silarus (hotel restaurant) and turned in for the night, anxious to explore our roots and accomplish the task set out for us…tune in for further details!
