Fri. Sept 11 Canyoneering 101 – and a little Rock Climbing Too!!

7 am and we’re not sure where we are meeting our guide and ride. Back to the Visitor Center, still not opened, but plenty of people on line for info and tickets.
I should mention that we got our first view of the campsite and surroundings. We are encircled by mountains, and our site is on the Virgin river – location, location, location. Back to the plan…
We get picked up and taken to the outfitters’. We were supplied with harnesses, back-packs(even though we had our own) and shoes (yes – even though we had our own). Then we went into the canyon via Dixie National Forest. Mike, our guide, was a wealth of information, explaining about formations, plateaus and mesas, and how and why the rock is red! I learned that the white faced mountain we saw yesterday is called the White Temple and it could be seen at great distances rising above the Zion plateau.
Mike took us to the Yankee Doodle Slot Canyon where we were instructed in rappelling, scrambling, down climbs and even rock climbing.
Check out the pix – they speak for themselves
Clara – the bus didn’t pick us up – that’s why we had a mandatory rock climbing tutorial!
Anne – I found the green door and used it!
John, Eddie, Allison – you said it couldn’t be done – WE DID IT!
GO TEAM LUFRANO!!
