Friday Sept 25th – Walapai West Rim WOW!!

Today we completed our circular tour of the Grand Canyon. Little did we know that the dirt road leading to the west rim was not RV friendly. We drove about 50 miles to Lake Mead City, way up in the brown, dusty hills of AZ. (Have you ever seen a dust bowl?) Anyhow, we were to go to a place, approx 1 mile from the turnoff for the rim. It’s literally called “the place”. We just drove til we saw other RVs in a parking lot! From there we were bused, along with a Las Vegas group, an additional 2o miles uphill, on a dirt and dusty road onto the reservation. Once up there, we could get on the Hop on/Hop off shuttle to visit the Eagle Point (where the skywalk is), visit authentic dwellings, and hike Guano Point. Here at Guano Point there was a magnificent view of the Colorado River, and remnants of an amazing tram(completed in 1958) still exists. The tram was built to go down 8800 feet to mine guano (bat poop) from a bat cave. Ugh you say – get this – the guano was used in make-up!! Not to worry – they gave up the tram, cause the cables interfered with the modern day helicopters. All in all, it was another spectacular day and we were thrilled that we didn’t chicken out.
The skywalk was an engineering feat! Marie and Ed chose not to go on, but I had seen so much press about it, that I had to. It gives you pause – because here this area of our great nation, this desolate, brown, arid, reservation, was a wasteland. This skywalk is built -and poof –teeming with tourists!! If you build it they will come – name the movie!!
All in all, our RV adventure has been quite an experience. We had fun blogging, and hope you enjoyed following us. Stay tuned – we’ve only just begun!
