We arrived into Rome by 2 and found our ABNB in the Monti section of Rome - we've never been there before. Chiara (our Italian tutor) was ending a tour at the catacombs, so we had to wait. Fortunately, we were able to leave the luggage at the apt, though we couldn't get in yet, and have some lunch (or gelato) right downstairs from our accommodations. Chiara showed up on a scooter! What a hoot - it was one of those rentals - and then we began our trek. The day was sunny and hot, but Chiara thought there was a hint of autumn in the air. Since we all had been to Rome a number of times, we didn't feel it necessary to visit the regulation monuments and points of interest.
We did make a quick stop into St Peter in chains to see Michelangelo's "Moses"...always mind blowing.
Making our way to the basilica of San Clemente, we stopped at a park overlooking the Colosseum. By the amount of tourists and vendors, like Venice, I'd say Rome is enjoying a comeback after the last two years!
The basilica stands on an archaeological excavation. The deepest level, a first-century structure associated with the mint of ancient Rome, the second, a building adapted toward the end of the second century for use by members of the cult of Mithras (a Greek god), and finally the basilica above. Chiara is a freelance archaeologist by education so it was great to have her knowledge and insight.
It was then decided to rent a car, to go clear across the city to yet another overlook.
